Chun ting Barbie

In case you ever forgot who the queen of rap was, Nicki Minaj is making sure you remember. After a Three month hiatus from the music industry the Barbie herself dropped two high anticipated singles and was featured on a Young Thug record. The day was dedicated to her and the hashtag #NickiDay was trending all over social media. Dropping new music during her interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Nicki made sure to spill all the tea when it came to “beef” with Cardi B and thoughts about ex Meek Mill and his incarceration. Clearing up exactly what went on with motorsport, Nick said her verse was changed per-request of Cardi, Quavo and the label she also made sure we knew the real reason behind her filming the video on separate days. Shedding a tear she told us how hurt she was that nobody stuck up for her during the “rain on Nicki parade” and how they chose to jump on the bandwagon instead of come to her defense.

The two songs dropped were “Chun Li”  and “Barbie Tingz“. Taking a step back to her more grimy mix-tape self (which we LOVE) it seems as tho she has left her more pop sound in the past for now. Both songs are bangers, because i mean, when does Nicki not make a banger? My favorite song of the two is Barbie Tingz. It has that bounce beat that makes you want to pop your pussy giving me mad cocky vibes. I can picture nicki in a cute little outfit with a sickening wig wagging her finger in your face and posing in her usual barbie way. Chung Li is cute too and she’s talking her shit letting y’all know what’s really good but its just not my fave. Honestly I’m just super ready for whatever the album has to offer.

Going back to #NickiDay her original motorsport verse appeared online. Originally Dj Akademiks had posted it on his twitch steam (but I don’t subscribe to his news in any way) but due to her finally spilling the tea it once again revealed itself. It had singing and a few words had been changed but the main difference was her saying “if Quavo the QB I’m Nick Lambardi” when it was originally “if Cardi the QB I’m Nick Lambardi” but it had to be changed as she saw it as a personal diss so Nicki complied. But the way she was talking was reminiscent of when she cam out and Kim wasn’t feeling her. Saying things like “she didn’t show love” is similar to what Lil’ Kim said about Nicki when she made her debut. Yes we must respect those who come before us but it seems that whoever is on top always wants those on the come up to kiss their asses (imo)

Once again, I’m so happy Nicki is back but I do need the tension of these two artists to just die. Be friends or don’t but, but lets move on because everyone is tired and over it. I’m ready for Nicki to talk about how wet and tight her pussy is and how fat her ass is while calling bitches her sons and talking that shit in general. Welcome back Barbie. A bitch has missed the fuck out of you.

Music Monday’s are back with a Bardi bang as Cardi B not only dropped her debut album but also revealed her pregnancy during her second performance on SNL. I just have to touch on the whole pregnancy announcement real quick before I get into the music so lets go sis. After months of denying the rumors and blaming her noticeable weight gain on being “fat” and strategically wearing ruffles as well as big clothing to hide her bump, she seemed super relieved to let the world in on her big secret saying “I’m finally free”. Now thinking about it she probably wanted to wait til her album dropped before opening up about the pregnancy so it wouldn’t over shadow what she’d been working on for the past year. The looks she served on SNL were perfect. They encapsulated the vibe of each song and gave you everything you didn’t know you needed Cardi to bring and let me tell you sis, she delivered.

After the global success of “Bodak Yellow” many people said Cardi was a one hit wonder and couldn’t really deliver much after but time and time again she proved the haters wrong. With the album already going gold (because of Bodak Yellow) there is no telling how high she can go within her career. The album “Invasion of privacy” has a very consistent vibe through out with no songs sounding out of place filled with musical highs and lows which allow you to experience an array of emotions. Known for the turn up, Cardi’s latest single “be careful” is all about relationship troubles and wanting your man to live up to certain expectations. Not something we’ve from her before but it was a pleasant change which reflects some elements of her relationship with fiance Offset of rapping group “Migos”.

No album is complete without the features (in my opinion) and there were some collaborations that were unexpected but delivered with great quality. We already knew about the feature from 21 Savage in the form of “Bartier Cardi” and we had assumed a collab with Migos was bound to happen but some more unexpected partnership occurred. She managed to get Sza, Kehlani, Chance The Rapper and even YG along with , Bad Bunny and J Balvin who can with the spanish sound. My personal favorites from the album are in no particular order

  1. Bickenhead
  2. I Do
  3. I Like It

Over all I would say Miss Belcalis Almanzar has only scratched the surface of her success and she is pretty limitless. If a baby won’t stop the peoples champ, I dont expect much else will.

DAMN YOUTH

I’ve been gone for a while again but I’m back with a double feature. Both Kendrick Lamar and Tinie Tempah released long awaited albums on the same day. It took me a few days (weeks) to listen to both and figure out what I wanted to say. Well, I’ve put my thoughts together so here goes. This was meant to go out yesterday but technical difficulties so here we go.

Lets start with the king himself, DAMN is packed full of bangers that also make you think. Following up the success of sophomore album ‘to pimp a butterfly’ would be difficult for anyone when you consider what it meant to his fans. Kdot uses his platform for more than fame, he shines a torch on social issues that America particularly black Americans face daily.

Tinie on the other hand takes a different musical realm. Coming from a grime background and transitioning into a more pop/mainstream side he’s had huge success. His album consists of the singles he dropped of the past few years and a whole bunch more. Honestly, I’ve always loved his singles and never listened to a full album. Guys, for real it is amazing. Tinie has delved deeper into his person life to produce more heartfelt music.

Both albums have contrasting sounds I guess because both artists come from different walks of life. Kendrick coming from California and currently living through a time where being black is almost dangerous. He infuses current events in society with history and witty lyrics that make you think and feel a certain way. Tinie is from south London where knife violence is at an all-time high. He embraces the London sound of grime but allows himself to explore other elements and genres of music giving him an eclectic sound.

If you are feeling woke you might want to listen to Kendrick Lamar because it makes you think and stirs something up inside you. If you want diversity and to try something new listen to Tinie Tempah. Or listen to both because they are both amazing and we need to support talented people whenever we can.

Top 3 DAMN songs

  1. LOYALTY.FEAT.RHIANNA
  2. YAH.
  3. ELEMENT.

Top 3 YOUTH songs

  1. Text From Your Ex (feat. Tinashe)
  2. Cameras (feat. David Stewart)
  3. Holy Moly

Of course I love the singles and their visuals for both albums so I chose separate songs.

DAMN YOUTH

Drake

I’m back with another Music Monday! This week is all about Drake and his new project “More Life”. There are a lot of positives and negatives about the album but I’m just going to start with me opinion. I’m not a fan, which is surprising to me because I normally LOVE everything he puts out. During the run up to his album release he put out singles and also was on a few features which got me really excited for what  he was going to produce.

Something I really appreciated about album was the features. With most of the extremely successful hip hop artists in America, sticking to the same collaborations it can be nice but repetitive.  Switching things up in classic chameleon Drake style, he took on his UK Roadman persona and mixed it with grime’s finest artists. Honestly my fave songs were the Giggs features and the Skepta interlude everything else I could live without.

It really speaks to Drakes character that given the chance he uses his fame and popularity to introduce his fan base to a new sound and new artists. The album, although not my favorite this he has put his name to is a reflection of the Drake we love but also gives us a taste of his future musical sounds.

This album marries a classic “emo Drake” sound where he sings about past relationships and feeling along with other genres such as grime and  afro-beats. Given time maybe I’ll learn to love it just like his others (doubt it) but either way i appreciate Drake and what he is doing for UK musicians. I’ll never hate on him, it’s all love.

Let me know what you think

Music Monday’s – Future

When it comes to Future I have to really make a conscious  effort to not mix my opinions of his personal life with the music, so here goes.

Both images were sourced from spotify.

Last month he released not one, but two albums in the space of a week. It was later revealed his motives behind it were to set a world record of having two albums at the number 1 and 2 spot at the same time. I think it was a clever idea and I’m not entirely sure if he succeeded or not. His albums were called “Future” and “Hndrxx” which are both names he goes by.

Each album has it’s own sound with Future being the more hyped up music that will gas you on a night out whereas Hendrix is more emotional and heartfelt. Not sure if either are his best work but there is something for everyone which is always nice. I would say though, that Hendrix is my favorite of the two.

I really enjoy when rappers show their softer more vulnerable side. Hip Hop in general is all about hyper-masculinity which is a social norm I don’t partake in. whenever I see a man who portrays himself as an alpha male take a step back to show emotion I am obsessed with it. Personally I think he thought Ciara would wait for him to get his act together and when she moved on he was in his feeling and wrote an album emoting that.

Anyway, musically and artistically Future never fails to deliver. I am a fan of his Artistry (and his face not gonna lie) but not a huge fan of him personally. But hey I’ll let you all judge for yourself.

Music Monday – Stormzy

Okay so I normally don’t listen to grime or UK rap in general but I’m done with excluding it. With a growing level of popularity across the globe, who am I to ignore this musical genre birthed from people like me?  Of all the artists that come under the umbrella of grime, Stormzy seems to be the most successful in the shortest amount of time.

Gang Signs and Prayer or “GSAP” as it is commonly known, takes you on a musical journey. Opening up about the relationship he has with his farther you are able to see a softer and more vulnerable side of the musician. Praising the lord in some songs whist asserting his dominance in others shows real range and depth.

Releasing his first studio album earlier this month I have to say it was better than expected. I was late to the party when he dropped his singles, I liked the one where he was telling everyone to shut up but other than that I had no clue. I had no real expectations for his album but I downloaded it anyway.

His latest single ” Big for your boots” is set in various locations around London. These images are relatable to the masses and so are his lyrics. Grime is the music of the UK street, it talks about things we all go through and this video speaks to that. With features from Kehlani, Lily Allen and a personal fave of mine Wretch 32 Stormzy is definitely one to watch and i for one will be watching.

Available on Apple Music check the album out for yourself.

Music Monday’s – Migos

I’m back with a musical bang. I’ve decided that from now on I will do something around the subject of music because, why not? To kick off this new segment I will be discussing Migos, their new album “culture” and my favorite singles. Not sure if every Music Monday will follow the same  format  but i guess we’ll just see how it goes.

So for the past few years Migos have been gaining popularity not only in the Hip-Hop/musical community but also among  the mainstream, pop world. Coming from Atlanta all three members; Quavo, Offset and Takeoff have a distinct group sound but are equally unique on their own. With endless bangers and perfect collabs, Migos won’t be going anywhere for the foreseeable future.

Not gonna lie this is the first project the group has put out that I have listened to in entirety. Recently I’ve been making an effort to listen to new music and of different genres. The Culture album is true to it’s name. It’s a harmonious balance of their Atlanta style, experiences and just plain hip hop. The only real negative I have to say is about the imbalance of song division. Quavo (Quavonce) is equal to the Beyonce so he get’s half or more of a song. Offset is the Kelly so he gets the next amount and Takeoff just gets what ever is left (the Michelle). But either way they’ve got a good thing going.

Fave Tracks

  1. Slippery (feat Gucci Mane)
  2. Out Yo Way
  3. Get Right Witcha

That’s all for now, more to come.
