I’m back with another Music Monday! This week is all about Drake and his new project “More Life”. There are a lot of positives and negatives about the album but I’m just going to start with me opinion. I’m not a fan, which is surprising to me because I normally LOVE everything he puts out. During the run up to his album release he put out singles and also was on a few features which got me really excited for what  he was going to produce.

Something I really appreciated about album was the features. With most of the extremely successful hip hop artists in America, sticking to the same collaborations it can be nice but repetitive.  Switching things up in classic chameleon Drake style, he took on his UK Roadman persona and mixed it with grime’s finest artists. Honestly my fave songs were the Giggs features and the Skepta interlude everything else I could live without.

It really speaks to Drakes character that given the chance he uses his fame and popularity to introduce his fan base to a new sound and new artists. The album, although not my favorite this he has put his name to is a reflection of the Drake we love but also gives us a taste of his future musical sounds.

This album marries a classic “emo Drake” sound where he sings about past relationships and feeling along with other genres such as grime and  afro-beats. Given time maybe I’ll learn to love it just like his others (doubt it) but either way i appreciate Drake and what he is doing for UK musicians. I’ll never hate on him, it’s all love.

Music Monday’s – Future

When it comes to Future I have to really make a conscious  effort to not mix my opinions of his personal life with the music, so here goes.

Both images were sourced from spotify.

Last month he released not one, but two albums in the space of a week. It was later revealed his motives behind it were to set a world record of having two albums at the number 1 and 2 spot at the same time. I think it was a clever idea and I’m not entirely sure if he succeeded or not. His albums were called “Future” and “Hndrxx” which are both names he goes by.

Each album has it’s own sound with Future being the more hyped up music that will gas you on a night out whereas Hendrix is more emotional and heartfelt. Not sure if either are his best work but there is something for everyone which is always nice. I would say though, that Hendrix is my favorite of the two.

I really enjoy when rappers show their softer more vulnerable side. Hip Hop in general is all about hyper-masculinity which is a social norm I don’t partake in. whenever I see a man who portrays himself as an alpha male take a step back to show emotion I am obsessed with it. Personally I think he thought Ciara would wait for him to get his act together and when she moved on he was in his feeling and wrote an album emoting that.

Anyway, musically and artistically Future never fails to deliver. I am a fan of his Artistry (and his face not gonna lie) but not a huge fan of him personally. But hey I’ll let you all judge for yourself.

Music Monday – Stormzy

Okay so I normally don’t listen to grime or UK rap in general but I’m done with excluding it. With a growing level of popularity across the globe, who am I to ignore this musical genre birthed from people like me?  Of all the artists that come under the umbrella of grime, Stormzy seems to be the most successful in the shortest amount of time.

Gang Signs and Prayer or “GSAP” as it is commonly known, takes you on a musical journey. Opening up about the relationship he has with his farther you are able to see a softer and more vulnerable side of the musician. Praising the lord in some songs whist asserting his dominance in others shows real range and depth.

Releasing his first studio album earlier this month I have to say it was better than expected. I was late to the party when he dropped his singles, I liked the one where he was telling everyone to shut up but other than that I had no clue. I had no real expectations for his album but I downloaded it anyway.

His latest single ” Big for your boots” is set in various locations around London. These images are relatable to the masses and so are his lyrics. Grime is the music of the UK street, it talks about things we all go through and this video speaks to that. With features from Kehlani, Lily Allen and a personal fave of mine Wretch 32 Stormzy is definitely one to watch and i for one will be watching.

Available on Apple Music check the album out for yourself.

I’m back with a musical bang. I’ve decided that from now on I will do something around the subject of music because, why not? To kick off this new segment I will be discussing Migos, their new album “culture” and my favorite singles. Not sure if every Music Monday will follow the same  format  but i guess we’ll just see how it goes.

So for the past few years Migos have been gaining popularity not only in the Hip-Hop/musical community but also among  the mainstream, pop world. Coming from Atlanta all three members; Quavo, Offset and Takeoff have a distinct group sound but are equally unique on their own. With endless bangers and perfect collabs, Migos won’t be going anywhere for the foreseeable future.

Not gonna lie this is the first project the group has put out that I have listened to in entirety. Recently I’ve been making an effort to listen to new music and of different genres. The Culture album is true to it’s name. It’s a harmonious balance of their Atlanta style, experiences and just plain hip hop. The only real negative I have to say is about the imbalance of song division. Quavo (Quavonce) is equal to the Beyonce so he get’s half or more of a song. Offset is the Kelly so he gets the next amount and Takeoff just gets what ever is left (the Michelle). But either way they’ve got a good thing going.

That’s all for now, more to come.

And, We Out

So, it’s been about a week since my fellow brits and I voted on whether or not to leave the EU nd I must say I am not happy with the result. who in heir right mind would think it was okay to leave the European union? I mean the conservatives who are known for only caring about the 1% were split on their opinion so you have to know it was a bad idea. Me being a nineteen year old black woman it is real easy for me to tell what is in favour of me and the life I intend to have because #BlackGirlMagic, duh.

firstly I would like to say that the British public was ill informed of what exactly the referendum was and the possible out comes of voting either way. everyone I spoke to seemed to be really unsure of what would happen if you voted either way. Personally I felt like I was going into a vote blind. if you tuned into a debate it would seem as though all the politicians were talking in gibberish using language that the everyday person couldn’t quite grasp leading them to make the wrong decision.

People thought leaving the EU would free up a whole bunch of money that could be put into the NHS and schools when really what was upper-class people feeding propaganda to the working class. That Farage guy even said (once the votes were counted)that it was just an option and there was no certainty that that is where the money will be spent. Basically once he tricked the poor people into doing what he wanted he withdrew the option of giving what he had promised.

Basically the youth and elderly were manipulated into leaving the EU by the rich as it would benefit the rich and possibly even push the gap of upper and lower class further apart. Just rich white men doing what they do best.

Everyone Falls in Luv

Pretty much since I heard the song Trap Queen my life has been taken over with everything Fetty Wap. I mean both musically and personally, if it’s about Fetty I’m like completely invested and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. But, I have to say I have a new musical fave; Tory Lanes.

He first popped onto my radar when I was watching the drop on YouTube and the host played a clip of his debut single “Say it”. he sampled a song that took me back to my early days and I was hooked from then I’ve been a fan. But this week proved to me just how incredible his music really is. his newest single is called LUV where he samples music from a Beenie Man song (which was sampled to begin with but that’s not important)and I knew it was love.

It seems a lot of Canadian artists are influenced by Caribbean music which I love being a child of Jamaican parents. Artists such as drake are really showing the influence in their new music and Tory is showing me that he is just and talented and creative.

Let it be known that I am here for Tory Lanes just as much as I am here for Fetty and RemyBoyMonty my new musical faves.

Work,work, work from home

So what’s this new trend where artist are releasing new songs about “work”. In maybe the space of a week both Rihanna and Fifth Harmony real eased new music with work in the title,  and they are both bangers.

Rihanna treated her fans to two back to back videos both different in concepts. One more kid friendly than the otherimage the first came as no surprise as it was teased on her snap chat. Looking like she had gone back to her Caribbean roots with dancing and some grinding on drake was a true to form video. But the second was a little less expected. Still dancing with drake it was set in a living room withpurple lighting  imagethe first single off fifth harmony’s new album is hopefully setting the tone for their new sound. The group is maturing as you can tell by the clothes and sexy lyrics but even the dance moves have improved image

collabing with ty dolla sign was a big thumbs up and shows their musical transition. I have to admit I’m exited. image
